New Tool In The Shop
This pas weekend I brought home a new (to me anyway) Carlisle “Imagination XPress” hydraulic forging press. This will allow me to do a lot more work as I won’t be reliant on tooling at other people’s shops to do much of my work.
Here she is as she sat in the trailer.
and in the shop:
I did a bit of forging today and was able to do what amounted to an unreal amount of work (by my previous standards ) in 2 hours. I anticipate being able to document a lot more of the work involved in making pattern welded steel as I will be moving a lot more quickly in my work.
I am also resurrecting a step in my pattern welding that I used to do and had stopped doing. After each weld/draw I’m cutting a small piece from the end of the bar to polish and etch to check my progress and make certain that the pattern is doing what I expect. I recommend this procedure to anyone who is just starting to check the quality of your welds and to help you understand what’s going on “inside” the steel.
