Hi, I’m Rob “Deker” Dekelbaum and you’ve stumbled upon my blog. This is a new idea for me. I’ve never had a blog before, mostly because I never had much to say. Recently though I seem to ba answering a lot of questions about pattern welded steel, so I figured that it would make sense to collect what I’ve learned someplace to refer people to.
A little background about me. I began blacksmithing in in 2001 when I took a basic blacksmithing class hosted by the Blacksmith Guild of Central Maryland . After that, I promptly spent a couple of years not doing any ‘smithing at all. Some time later I took more classes from BGCM. I also moved closer to the guild forge which allowed me to more easily take classes and be active in the guild. It was in November of 2006 when I took the BGCM knifemaking class and was hooked. About a year after that class I welded my first billet and made it into this knife:
Since then I have become a dedicated student of pattern welding. I learn all I can and try everything I have the time to try. I’ll be updating this blog as regularly as I can and will add brain dumps of what I know about pattern welding in the hopes that it will help other people learn this addicting and wonderful craft.
We’ll see how this goes. Wish me luck!
